Royal Heritage - Tripura Castle,शिलांग

The Tripura Castle (as it is locally called) is an opulent, majestic and truly a king’s palace that has been converted into a hotel.

It is a living reminder of the princely romance of Maharaja Bir Bikram of Tripura with Shillong. Maharaja Bir Bikram had come here from Tripura in his teens and fell in love with the place. He stayed back and later built and settled at the Tripura Castle.

Tripura Castle exteriors are as opulent as its interior. A serpentine rode adorned with pine trees on both sides, bamboo groves and cherry blossoms leads to the majestic Heritage hotel – the first of its kind in North East India. After the grand entrance, you will be welcomed by a three-tiered garden, a marvelous collection of orchids, and a rose garden that dates back to the times of the Second World War.

On entering the heritage building, the antiques, artworks, Chinese furniture, art deco and Victorian objects d'art pose an imposing sight. You shouldn’t miss out on the paintings and photographs of the members of the Tripura dynasty (who used the Castle as their summer retreat). There is also a large private library which has many first edition books and valuable manuscripts.
