One of the most unexplored destinations in India is the untouched natural beauty of South Garo Hills. Situated in the south of Meghalaya, South Garo Hills is one of the smallest districts in the country. The district headquarters is in Baghmara and the district is especially known for its difficult terrain. The South Garo Hills shares its borders with East Garo Hills in the north, West Khasi Hills in the east, West Garo Hills in the west and parts of Bangladesh in the south.

South Garo Hills tourism is still in its nascent stage and there are several unexplored destinations here. The government of Meghalaya is taking initiative to make it one of the adventure destinations in the state. For the enthusiasts, South Garo Hills tourism boasts of the Balpakram National Park, Chidimak and the Siju Cave.

Places such as Nengkong, SijuBalpakram, Imilchang Dare, Dombeware, Emangre, Simsang  River and more are some of the famous attractions of South Garo Hills. 

How to Reach South Garo Hills

Tourists can make Baghmara their base camp and explore the hilly terrains of South Garo Hills. Tura, the second largest town in Meghalaya is 55 kilometres while Guwahati is 157 kilometres from Baghmara. Roadways are the only means of transport to Baghmara and buses are available at regular intervals.

South Garo Hills weather

South Garo Hills experiences a temperate climate throughout the year with plenty of rainfall. Summers are hot in the district while the monsoons bring in pleasant relief in the form of rain. Winters are moderate in the South Garo Hills. The winters are the best time to visit the district.

    National Highway 62 passes through Baghmara and serves as the lifeline to the entire district. Buses and tourist vehicles regularly ply on the national highway. Tourists can easily book a cab or board a state-run bus to reach Baghmara. To travel to other destinations, it is best to book a tourist vehicle.

    The Guwahati railway station is the nearest railhead to Baghmara and other destinations in South Garo Hills. Guwahati is approximately 157 kilometres from Baghmara. However the best way to travel is to first reach Tura from Guwahati and then take a cab or a bus to Baghmara.

    Tourists planning to take a flight will have to book a ticket to the Guwahati airport. The reason is Meghalaya has only one airport in Umroi which only has direct flights to Kolkata. The Guwahati airport is well connected to each and every part of the country.
