Tuljapur - The Abode Of Tulja Bhavani

12

Tuljapur is a marvel of a pilgrim centre that has seen an ever increasing influx of tourists and devotees alike for several years now. The Tulja Bhawani Temple in Tuljapur is the most prominent attraction that is the reason behind the magnifying quantity of pilgrims this small village sees so frequently.

The name of the place shifted from Chinchpur to Tuljapur after Goddess Tulja Bhawani – the deity in whose devotion the monumental temple has been established.

Some Specifics

Tuljapur is a calm and quiet city based on the Yamunachala Hills of the Sahayadri Ranges. It is located in the Osmanabad District of the state of Maharashtra and is situated about 650 metres above sea level. It lies on the highway from Sholapur to Aurangabad.

Tuljapur was formerly called Chinchpur, that is, the Land of Tamarind Trees. The history of this region dates back to as much as the 12th Century.

What To See In Tuljapur While You’re There

The Tulja Bhawani Temple gains its significance from being one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas in India. The Sant Garibh Mutt is another religious spot made by an ardent devotee of Lord Bishnu and which presently offers various meditation and yoga facilities. The Sant Bharati Buwa Mutt is yet another sightseeing spot.

The Dhakte Tuljapur is literally a ‘Younger’ Tuljapur located on the outskirts of the town. It has a smaller idol of the same Goddess – Goddess Tulja Bhawani. It is believed that before visiting the main temple, a visit to this smaller version is an absolute must. Interestingly the idol found here was found by a Muslim man.

The Ghat Shila Temple is made in dedication to Lord Rama and is carved out from a rock in a very unique manner.

The Kallola Tirth, the Vishnu Tirth, the Gomukh Tirth and the Papanashi Tirth are some of important Tirth tanks present here. A dip in these tanks ensures an ardent believer a complete cleansing from all his sins. Many pilgrims can be found taking a bath in these Tirths to purge themselves of their troubles and curses.

The Chintamani is a beautifully constructed holy spot. It is structured in a round shape and is environed by many smaller shrines dedicated to other deities like the Matangi, the Narasimha, the Khandoba and Yamai Devi.

Akkalkot and Pandharpur are two destinations close to Tuljapur that must be visited.

WhenTo Go And How To Go

Tuljapur enjoys a very pleasant weather for most part of the year. The summer season is not a great time to visit this holy site given the extreme levels the temperature rises to. All tourist activities might just come to a standstill given the impossible heat outside your rooms that might make even stepping out difficult. Hence, this season is usually avoided. The monsoons are a pleasant respite that provides a significant amount of rainfall, making the entire region all the more beautiful and serene. Travelling during this time will be a boon for monsoon lovers, but not as much for visitors who prefer to remain away from the rains. The winter in Tuljapur is the best time to pay homage to the deities here as well as indulge in a little exploring and sightseeing.

The festivals of Navratri, Gudi Padva and Makar Sankranti are a great time to visit the place and participate in the local celebrations.

The religious destination of Tuljapur is reachable by air, rail and road. The Pune Airport comes as the nearest airport if you happen to travel by train. One will have to opt for a cab service from the airport to reach the sight thereafter. Tuljapur can be reached via train from the Sholapur railway station, which is a few kilometres away. If you plan to cover the journey by road, state transport and private buses pose as good options for a comfortable and a relatively economic travel.

The quaint little town of Tuljapur has received a lot of attention from around the world given the presence of the historic temple of Tulja Bhawani there. A popular religious site, Tuljapur is a must visit on the list of any god–loving devotee. Pack your bags and pay a visit to this pious place and let the positive energy here engulf you. Your trip here will not only be memorable, but restore your faith in the presence of a higher power.
